A Grand Junction Republican vying for an open seat in the
state Senate leads his opponent in fund-raising by nearly
$15,000, according to reports filed this month with the
Colorado Secretary of State.

Rep. Josh Penry raised more than $20,000 in the last three
months of 2005, bringing his campaign war chest to about
$34,000.

Former state representative Matt Smith, Penry’s predecessor
in the House, received more than $19,100 through the end of
last year.

Penry and Smith seek the Senate District 7 seat currently
held by Sen. Ron Teck, R-Grand Junction.

Teck is term-limited.

No Democratic candidates have yet aired their intention to
run for Teck’s post.

Rep. Bernie Buescher reported raising about $38,700 through
2005.

Bob Caske, the Grand Junction Republican challenging
Buescher’s re-election bid for House District 55, has
$1,200 on hand.

The Rev. Dan Wilkenson of Grand Junction, who aims to
succeed Penry in House District 54, received contributions
of $434 through 2005.

Who will run against Wilkenson on the Democratic ticket
remains to be seen.

Rep. Ray Rose, R-Montrose, whose House District 58 includes
Delta, Dolores, Montezuma, Montrose, Ouray and San Miguel
counties, has about $1,300.

Candidates must file quarterly reports on Jan. 15, April
15, July 15 and Oct. 15 of every year. Additional reports
are required in election years.

Smith officially announced his candidacy earlier this
month.

Penry made his bid official last Saturday, when he named
his campaign co-chairmen: Mesa County District Attorney
Pete Hautzinger and Mesa County commissioners Janet Rowland
and Craig Meis.

The two Senate District 7 candidates square off for the GOP
nomination in the August primary.
